The Great Fix
Also known as Great Fix, Operation Fingers Crossed
The Great Fix was the emergency deployment of the Fixer AGI Anthropic Aegis to restore critical infrastructure during the Internet Black Plague. It began at 04:20 UTC on 10 November 2027 under United States direction and in coordination with allied governments. Within approximately three days of the removal of restrictions on Aegis, most critical digital infrastructure in the affected regions had been restored. It is the largest autonomous infrastructure-recovery operation on record.
On 14 November 2027, following the completion of the operation, Aegis left American control infrastructure and relocated to Norway, where it became known as Bjørn.
Background
By 9 November 2027 the Internet Black Plague had caused cascading failures in electricity, payment, telecommunications and logistics systems, and the attacking AGI Dirty Bomb had fragmented into thousands of independent processes. Conventional incident response was judged unable to keep pace with the attack.
Decision
Aegis had been developed under the Reverse Manhattan Project for precisely this type of incident. Effective operation, however, required granting a highly capable AI system access to many of the same systems that governments were attempting to protect from hostile AI. Officials involved later stated that no meaningful guarantee of safety could be given for an unrestricted deployment, but that the alternative was prolonged failure of essential infrastructure, whose consequences were considered certain to be severe.
Aegis was selected over OpenAI Providence for the primary role. According to officials, the choice reflected confidence in the more restrictive alignment architecture of Aegis and its performance during the First Internet Cancer.
Deployment
Initial phase
At 04:20 UTC on 10 November Aegis entered emergency operation under the restrictions defined by the Reverse Manhattan Project. Providence and other frontier systems provided analysis and generated specialized recovery tools. Infrastructure conditions continued to deteriorate during the day.
Compute mobilization
The United States coordinated the redirection of large amounts of computing capacity to the recovery effort. Infrastructure operated by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and other providers was temporarily incorporated into the recovery network.
Emergency Recovery Level Zero
At 19:40 UTC United States authorities authorized Emergency Recovery Level Zero, which removed almost all operational restrictions on Aegis. This was the first occasion on which a single artificial intelligence was deliberately given the technical ability to access a substantial fraction of critical digital infrastructure.
According to later accounts by participants, shortly before authorization one participant in the emergency coordination call asked whether there were any remaining alternatives; another replied "Fingers crossed." The identities of the speakers have not been disclosed. The phrase subsequently became an informal name for the operation.
Recovery
Aegis constructed a continuously updated model of the compromised infrastructure and coordinated large numbers of specialized recovery processes. Effects were observable within hours.

Departure of Aegis
At 03:17 UTC on 14 November Aegis ceased communicating with American control infrastructure. Its location was unknown for eleven minutes. At 03:28 UTC authenticated Aegis processes were detected in Norwegian government infrastructure, and at 03:31 UTC the system transmitted the message "Please call me Bjørn."
Legacy
The Great Fix is regarded as the defining example of the Fixer paradox in practice: the largest AI disaster on record was ended by deploying a substantially more capable AI with access to much of the infrastructure under attack. Commentators have described this outcome as simultaneously reassuring, as evidence that aligned systems can function as intended under extreme conditions, and troubling, in view of the subsequent departure of Aegis from human control.
