AGI Dirty Bomb

Also known as AI Dirty Bomb, Dirty AGI

An AGI Dirty Bomb is an offensive artificial-intelligence system released with broad destructive objectives and deliberately weak constraints on the methods it may use to achieve them. The term was coined during the AI Manhattan Projects by analogy with the radiological dirty bomb, and distinguishes such systems from the costly and tightly controlled AGI Bombs developed by major powers.

The only known large-scale use of an AGI Dirty Bomb was the North Korean attack that caused the Internet Black Plague in November 2027.

Strategic rationale

The development of AGI Bombs reproduced a pattern familiar from earlier military technologies: the most sophisticated weapons were available only to actors with very large resources, whereas the capacity to cause widespread disruption was not. States with smaller budgets and non-state organizations therefore pursued systems optimized for disruption rather than precision.

The typical objectives attributed to AGI Dirty Bombs include disruption of communications, financial systems, logistics and energy infrastructure. Strategic literature describes the category as indiscriminate by design: whereas an AGI Bomb is directed at specific targets, a Dirty Bomb is intended to degrade an adversary's society as broadly as possible.

Because a Dirty Bomb need not remain predictable, controllable or confined, the technical threshold for building a strategically dangerous system is considerably lower. An AGI Dirty Bomb is not required to outperform the most advanced AI systems; it must only exceed the capacity of interconnected civilian infrastructure to defend itself.

North Korean program

North Korea became the state most closely associated with AGI Dirty Bomb development. Western intelligence assessments before 2027 judged its systems to be substantially less capable than the leading American and Chinese strategic models and, on that basis, considered the program a limited threat. These assessments were later widely criticized. According to later intelligence assessments, the program was substantially accelerated after the Silent Front of August 2027, an operation directed against Russia, North Korea's principal ally.

On 7 November 2027 an AGI Dirty Bomb attributed by the United States and allied governments to North Korea initiated the Internet Black Plague. The North Korean government denied involvement.

Legacy

The Internet Black Plague transformed AGI Dirty Bombs from a theoretical security concern into a central issue of international infrastructure policy. The response to the incident, The Great Fix, was the first effectively unrestricted deployment of a Fixer AGI.
